Mean, median and one unusual value

Key points

  1. Put values in order before finding the median.
  2. The mean is the sum divided by the number of values.
  3. For an even number of values, average the two middle values to find the median.
  4. An unusual value can affect mean and median differently.

Worked example

10, 10, 15, 20, 70 minutes

Median = 15 minutes

Mean = 125 ÷ 5 = 25 minutes

Try it
