Read a graph: axes, scale and units
Read a graph: axes, scale and units
Key points
- Read the title, both axes, scale and units before interpreting a point.
- One grid step can represent more than one unit.
- Read the horizontal value first, then the matching vertical value.
- Include units in a change or rate. A trend alone does not prove a cause.
Worked example
At 3 minutes, the original graph shows 6 liters.
Change from 1 to 3 minutes: 6 − 2 = 4 liters.
Average rate: 4 L ÷ 2 min = 2 L/min.
Try it
A vertical scale shows 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 liters. How much is one grid step?
Answer: One equal grid step represents 2 liters.
