Punnett squares: the chance of a trait
Punnett squares: count the chances
Key points
- Each parent passes on 1 letter for a gene.
- Capital letter = dominant. Small letter = recessive.
- Draw 4 boxes. One parent across the top, one down the side.
- Count the boxes and turn the count into a fraction or percent.
- Genotype = the letters. Phenotype = what you can see.
Worked example
Tt × Tt (T = tall, t = short)
Boxes: TT, Tt, Tt, tt
3 of 4 tall = 75%. 1 of 4 short = 25%.
Try it
