A fraction can name a point on a number line. The denominator tells how many equal parts make one whole. The numerator tells how many parts to count.
Start with zero and one. Divide that distance into four equal spaces. The marks are one quarter, one half, three quarters, and one.
Three quarters means count three of those spaces from zero. The size of each space must stay equal, or the picture becomes misleading.
Two quarters lands halfway to one. It is the same point as one half. Equivalent fractions describe the same value.
To place five quarters, keep the same quarter sized spaces and continue past one. Five quarters is one and one quarter.
A number line also helps compare values. For positive numbers, the point farther right is larger. Three quarters is greater than one half.
Try it: where is six quarters? Count six quarter sized spaces. It is one and one half. Draw the line before checking your answer.
