A print shop charges twenty-five dollars, plus ten cents per page.

The bill is thirty-two dollars. How many pages?

Let x be the pages. Twenty-five plus zero point one zero x equals thirty-two.

Subtract twenty-five from both sides. Zero point one zero x equals seven.

Divide both sides by zero point one zero. x equals seventy pages.

Check: twenty-five plus seven is thirty-two. The answer fits the bill.

Your turn. Eighteen dollars plus twenty cents per page totals thirty dollars. How many pages?

Sixty pages. Subtract eighteen to get twelve. Divide twelve by zero point two zero.

Remove the fixed fee, then divide by the rate.

An eighty-dollar item is fifteen percent off. Then eight percent sales tax is added.

Pay eighty-five percent of the price. Eighty times zero point eight five is sixty-eight dollars.

Tax is on the sale price: sixty-eight times zero point zero eight is five dollars and forty-four cents.

Add the tax. Sixty-eight plus five point four four equals seventy-three dollars and forty-four cents.

Do not combine the percentages into seven percent off. The base amount changes after the discount.

Your turn. Fifty dollars, twenty percent off, then five percent tax. What is the total?

Forty-two dollars. Fifty times zero point eight is forty. Forty times one point zero five is forty-two.

Apply each percentage to the correct amount.

A forty-liter tank is three quarters full.

Three quarters of forty is thirty liters of water.

You use two fifths of the water in the tank. Two fifths of thirty is twelve liters.

Thirty minus twelve leaves eighteen liters.

Two fifths applies to the water present, not the forty-liter capacity.

Your turn. A forty-five-liter tank is two thirds full. You use half the water. How much remains?

Fifteen liters. Two thirds of forty-five is thirty. Half of thirty remains.

Ask: a fraction of which amount?
