Percent means out of one hundred. A discount is the part you subtract from the original price. The final price is what remains.
Imagine a jacket costs sixty dollars before tax. The discount is twenty five percent. First find the amount of the discount.
Twenty five percent is one quarter. One quarter of sixty dollars is fifteen dollars. That is the amount saved, not the amount you pay.
Subtract fifteen from sixty. The sale price is forty five dollars before tax. Keep those two answers clearly labeled.
A second method uses decimals. Twenty five percent is zero point two five. Multiply sixty by zero point two five to get fifteen.
Check with the remaining percent: one hundred minus twenty five is seventy five percent. Seventy five percent of sixty is forty five.
Try it: an eighty dollar item is fifteen percent off. Pause. The discount is twelve dollars; the price is sixty eight dollars before tax.
