Read a graph: axes, scale and units
1:201-page summary: Read a graph: axes, scale and units
- Read the title, both axes, scale and units before interpreting a point.
- One grid step can represent more than one unit.
- Read the horizontal value first, then the matching vertical value.
- Include units in a change or rate. A trend alone does not prove a cause.

Before reading a graph, check its title, axes, scale, and units. These labels tell you what the numbers actually mean.
In this original graph, the horizontal axis is time in minutes. The vertical axis is water volume in liters. Each plotted point connects a time with a volume.
The vertical marks count by two liters: zero, two, four, six, eight. One grid step means two liters, not one.
At three minutes, the point is at six liters. Read the time first, move to the point, then read across to the volume axis.
From one minute to three minutes, volume rises from two liters to six liters. The change is four liters over two minutes.
That average rate is two liters per minute. Say the units with the number so the answer has meaning.
A rising line shows an increase in this example, but it does not by itself prove a cause. Check labels and scale before explaining the trend.
